Preparation to Take for an Interior Painting Project

Painting a home can be a great way to spruce up the place and transform it. In fact, it’s one of the most cost effective methods of doing a home renovation, which is why it’s so popular. Despite the fact that most people think painting is relatively easy, it’s really important to prepare your home before you pick up a paint brush. Here are some of the most important ways to prepare a home for interior painting:

  1. Make Plenty of Space in the Rooms

The very first step to take when preparing to paint is to make plenty of space in the room. This means clearing out any furniture and moving items so that they don’t get in the way. The last thing you want is for furniture to get splashed with paint or to trip over something when you’re trying to paint the walls.

  1. Clean the Walls

This is one detail that lots of amateur painters forget. Though modern paints are so much better at adhering to surfaces, walls should still be prepared before picking up the brush.

Walls can get pretty dirty and grimy over time, and if there are kids in the home, it’s not unusual for there to be pencil or crayon marks. Make sure that you clean as much of this off as possible before painting. Some people like to use Sugar Soap to do it, but any sort of cleaning is better than none and it will allow the paint to stick more effectively and help to prevent bubbles.

  1. Use Sheeting

Once the space has been cleared out, you need to put down sheeting to cover up the floors and anything else in the room. If you don’t do this, you risk flecks and drips of paint covering your belongings. The good news is that lots of hardware stores now stock plastic sheeting just for this purpose. If you don’t have access to this sheeting, old sheets are better than nothing at all.

  1. Fix Any Cracks and Holes

It’s also not unusual for there to be cracks and holes in the walls. This may be due to direct damage or movement of the home. Before you paint, it’s really important to repair these areas with filling material from the hardware store. This will form a smooth and even surface for the paint layers.

  1. Use Masking Tape

If you’re going to be painting around fixtures, such as window frames, it’s important to use masking tape over areas that you need to protect from the paint. Most hardware stores stock special painter’s tape just for this purpose. It’s easy to use and can be torn off with your fingers.

Transform Your Home

A lick of paint can go a long way towards transforming your home into something special. It’s important to prepare the room to be painted so that the best possible job can be done. In this context, the right kind if preparation is everything.
